Exterior GOthic Fire screen
Project Brief
This fire screen was made for a sandstone fireplace that was part of an outdoor living room/ patio for a residence in the Detroit suburbs. The fire screen combined ornamental and foliate motifs to create interest and complexity. Particularly of note are the complicated forged and fabricated moldings and the leaves emanating from the structure of the frame. A woven steel cloth sits behind the forged elements creating a further level of opacity, while allowing heat transfer. Smith Shop designed, forged, and fabricated this exceptional work.

Interior GOthic Firescreen
Project Brief
This firescreen was made for a 1925 Tudor Revival home in the Detroit suburbs. Designed to compliment the carved moldings of the limestone surround, the firescreen combined ornamental and foliate motifs to create interest and complexity. A woven steel cloth sits behind the forged elements creating a further level of opacity, while allowing heat transfer. Smith Shop designed, forged, and fabricated this virtuoso centerpiece.

Scrolled Firescreen
Project Brief
This firescreen was made for a 1925 venetian gothic-revival home in Detroit’s Boston-Edison Neighborhood. Designed to compliment other period Arts and Crafts elements in the home, the firescreen combines scrollwork with unique ornamental forgings to create symmetry and interest, while also creating depth and complexity. A woven steel cloth sits behind the forged elements creating a further level of opacity, while allowing heat transfer. Smith Shop designed, forged, and fabricated this stunning firescreen.

door grillE
Project Brief
This door grille was made for an exterior screen door in the Detroit suburbs. The forged elements are gathered at central points throughout the composition while decorative finials act as mounting brackets. Delicate and foliate, this grille provide a transition between the strong texture of the architectural materials and the lush garden which it leads to. Smith Shop designed, forged, fabricated, and installed this grille.

Screen door
Project Brief
This ornate grille is nested within an exterior screen door in the Detroit suburbs. The composition references traditional English ironwork forms with a few modern touches. The nine foot tall, reaches up to the rounded brick arch above. The central drifted crossbars provide structure. The door project included building the door frame and jamb, a lockbox, handles, and a removable brass mesh screen. Smith Shop designed, forged, fabricated, and installed this stunning door.

Floor Register Grille
Project Brief
A historic Detroit home needed a replacement floor grille for a large air return. Smith shop designed this 3 x 2 foot solid brass grille to work harmoniously with the Arts and Crafts interior and to prevent the owner’s children from falling into the large opening. Smith Shop designed, fabricated, and installed this large brass grille.

Cabinet door grille
Project Brief
These small screen doors were made for a wooden kitchen cabinet. The doors open to reveal a handwrought copper tray mounted on steel slide rails featuring a slow close mechanism. Smith Shop designed, forged, formed, fabricated and installed these functional screen doors and copper tray.

Project Brief
This small screen was made for a custom wood-fired oven. The screen sits in the opening while in operation to prevent embers from jumping onto the kitchen floor. Smith Shop designed, forged, and fabricated this functional screen.
