We’re well into our second run of bottle openers for @michigancentraldetroit
These bottle openers are made from reclaimed railroad sleeper plates that we extensively reforged. These should be available in time for the holidays in the retail store at the station.

We’ve just returned from teaching a weeklong workshop, “A Love Letter to Grilles,” at Penland School of Craft. We were extremely blessed by the passion, aptitude, excitement, and dedication of our students. Only a couple students had previous blacksmithing experience, and yet everyone achieved incredible results. That’s about all you could ask for as an instructor. One week was far too short to spend with such wonderful people in such a wonderful place.

Working on a delightful hook I was not quite able to finish for a recent art fair. We missed the really exciting first heat of placing the upper half of the hook into the hollow on the back of the collar, but the second welding heat was pretty fun too. An exterior door just completed. Forged steel with woven bronze screens. Inspired by the client’s Scandinavian textile collection. It’s tough to run down the level of detail and craftsmanship in this piece, maybe we’ll do a walk through post for this one on site because we really raised the bar for ourselves. The center stretcher with the fronds is just so breathtaking. The ring handles and hardware are fully custom. Scroll back to see the slide latch. There’s a nice bit of forging in each and every bar. A recently completed fire screen. The client is a naturalist and so we snuck a few native birds into the gille work. Just over 5 feet wide, bronze woven wire mesh. We really had a good time with this one. And now off to install!

Just a few weeks until our workshop at the Penland school of crafts. As we prepare, we are getting very excited! Just getting started on the restoration of three Samuel Yellin grilles from a house in Detroit’s Boston Edison neighborhood. These grilles were made in 1915 for the home of women’s clothing manufacturer Joseph Siegel.
With the paint and rust removed you can really see how these fairly early Yellin grilles were constructed. While there is documentation proving that these works were by Yellin, they are not signed. Which seems somewhat common on early Yellin works.
